The small girl sat in the field, her arms wrapped around her knees. The golden stalks of grass waved in the wind. She reached out a slender, pale finger to touch one of the flower's petals, this one blue. The sun was shining brightly, and the grass provided little shade, but it was still her favorite spot, the field.
After a moment she rested her chin on her knees. The buzzing of bees filled her ears, even though it was winter. It didn't matter, it felt like summer. She could hear the distant sound of people chattering as they collected herbs. It was quite peaceful.
Cold whispers of air tickled the backs of my arms despite my cardigan. I felt like i was going to freeze to death. My long legs were covered by a skirt and tights, not nearly enough to shield me from this, but it was my own fault. I huddled away from my group of friends, dropping the woven basket that wasn't even half filled with herbs.
Why had someone even suggested this as a thing? Just because some popular kpop band did it for an album cover, didn't mean it was cool to do, especially in winter. I wandered away, a flowery part of the meadow blossoming in front of me. I wiggled my toes within my boots. At least my legwarmers were there to keep me slightly warm.
I felt my leg knock into something and jumped. I looked down to only see a girl. My face lit up red and hopped back. I gave a bow looked at her worriedly. "Oh my gosh! Sorry, sorry, sorry!" I probably looked like a giant from the ground up. being one hundred eighty two centimeters tall had quite a few downfalls.
Rui jumped as something bumped into her back. She turned her head, the girl that had kicked her towering above her. She regarded the other female before standing and brushing off her leggings. Naeun was pretty, she had to admit. Just her type. But she wasn't going to say that allowed. She didn't want to say anything allowed.
The wavy haired girl wasn't good at making friends - that's probably why she didn't have many. By the looks of it, this new girl had a whole group of friends. She backed away. "Uh, that's okay," she muttered quickly, glancing over at the other girl's friends. They were probably waiting for her, and Rui didn't want it to be because of her. "I'll just, um, leave."
She turned away quickly, letting out a puff of breath. She had probably looked like an idiot. Oh well. Maybe it was her high tolerance for cold, or her over-sized hoodie, but somehow she felt the day was warm, while everyone else clearly thought different. Ugh. I'm just a freak.
I pursed my lips as I watched her reaction. I caught a clean glance of the girl's overall appearance. She wasn't... unattractive. She looked a little bedraggled, considering the hoodie and leggings, but she definitely wasn't bad looking. I watched her turn away and gave a forlorn stare at her back. Had I offended her? I looked over my shoulder, my friends were still laughing and rolling around in the wheat stalks that covered the meadow like grass.
I chased after the girl, easily being able to catch up. I gulped and reached out to grab her shoulder. Warm. My hand was ice cold against the heated surface of her shoulder. I pulled my hand back, long, painted nails scraping against the skin on my knuckle as I tapped my hand absently.
"I-I'm really sorry if I offended you. I'm Yuna Naeun, but you can just call me Naeun if you'd, uh, like to... but you might not want to be acquainted with me considering I kind punted my shoe into your back..." My worried thoughts tumbled from my mouth as I twiddled my thumbs. I hoped I hadn't left a bruise on her back.
Rui could hear the footsteps behind her, and then a hand on her shoulder - and ice cold one. She nearly jumped back, but she reminded herself not to be rude and turned around. She thought I offended her? Gah, I have got to be more social, she glanced down at her Uggs, her cheeks turning a soft pink.
"Oh, um, I'm Rui Nishio. Rui" she stated, glancing up at the brown eyed girl with her own green eyes, though her head was still tiled downwards. "You..you didn't offend me," she muttered, her voice soft, hoping Naeun would understand that she wasn't the best in socail situations.
She stood there awkwardly, not wanting to turn away again in fear of offending Naeun or being rude, but she didn't know what to say. She glanced over at the girls friends again, who seemed to be having fun. Why doesn't she go goof around with them? I'm no fun. Why is she talking to me?
I relaxed a small bit as she stated her name. She didn't totally dislike me, right? I offered a kindly smile. "Rui? That's a cute name!" I said with a little head nod. This girl didn't seem to be very extroverted, but I had to take it upon myself to at least become her friend. She seemed rather nice anyways.
I reached out to hold her hands as a little shiver passed through me. "Oh, would you mind? You're so warm! I'm terribly cold, might as well freeze me into a popsicle by now!" I let out a small laugh at the notion of it. "Oi, it's probably my fault though," I said before pausing to reach back for a moment to tug on the edge of my thin cardigan.
"I've heard beauty is pain, but I never heard beauty meant freezing to death!" My knees pressed together as I stood there, feeling rather awkward with my long limbs. My hands were still reached out to hold Rui's as I cocked my head in questioning.
Rui gave a small, bashful smile. "Thank you," she murmured, shuffling her feet. "I, uh, like your name too," she added, gritting her teeth in hopes the girl wouldn't think her odd. It was true, she liked it a lot. She clasped her hands behind her back, fiddling with her thumbs and fore-fingers.
She glanced down at Nae's outstretched hands. Uh... Wasn't that a little awkward? Especially since Rui liked girls instead of guys, but she doubted Naeun felt the same way. It won't be awkward. Just for me. But of course, I'm just weird. She's probably normal. It shouldn't matter. It won't be awkward for her, just for me, and she won't know my thoughts.
Still, the hands seemed miles away. So she knows she's beautiful, she thought, then immediately scolded herself. She took her hands hesitantly, shocked by the freezing fingers. Her face grew warm and red in embarrassment, and she tried in vain to force it down. "If beauty is pain, then I don't feel pain," she mumbled.
I grinned at her words. "Thank you," I murmured happily. I watched her movements carefully, unsure if she would grasp my hands. I hesitated, ready to pull them back, but the sudden warm sent a little shiver down my spin. I gave her an encouraging smile and laced my fingers through her's.
"I think you're just numb from all the pain that you feel, if you put it that way." I gave her a silly, little wink to lighten the heavy mood that seemed to settle on our shoulders. "You're so warm! I'd hug you if I could," I pouted, words made shaky by chattering teeth.
I cast my glance towards the edge of the meadow. A small coffee shop with a big smiling sun on the building's front caught my attention. "I'm a wimp against the cold, want to go to the shop down there? I can treat you!" I said excitedly as I peered at her with big eyes.
Rui blinked. Was Naeuna complimenting her on how she looked? She'd never gotten such a nice compliment before - usually people just shrugged and avoided the topic. "Th-thank you," she stuttered, her cheeks bright red. She glanced away, the other girl's hands suddenly feeling heavy in her hands.
Maybe we shouldn't be doing this... Eh, it didn't matter if Rui liked Nae. Nae didn't like Rui, she was certain. She smiled softly. "I...don't get cold easily," she internally flinched at her words. She doesn't care! She glanced up at the other girl. She can hug me if she wants.
Rui's hair fell across her face as she looked down at her shoes, and she removed a hand from. Nae's grin to brush it away, before gripping her cold hand again. She looked up at the girl's offer, giving a small nod. She loved coffee. "Uh, yeah. That'd be great," she glanced over at the ginger-haired girl's friends. "Are you sure your friends won't miss you...?"
